Fields of Elysium by A.B. Whelan

How can love mend a heart full of hate? Small town girl, Molly Bennett, moves to Los Angeles where she becomes an outsider while attending Beverly Hills High School. It seems life cannot be any more dreadful. Then one day after school, something magical happens. On a secluded hike in the Hollywood Hills, Molly chases her disobedient mutt and only friend into a hidden cavern. She stumbles upon a strange glimmering gateway that transports her to Arkana, a planet that is the cradle of an advanced human race. There, teenagers navigate amazing flying vehicles, compete in perilous games for glory, and possess supernatural powers. While Molly tries to wrap her mind around this unbelievable discovery, she meets the alluring and mysterious Victor Sorren. He is a Sentinel Apprentice, whose hatred toward people from Earth is beyond understanding. Yet every time Victor unpredictably saves Molly's life, his heart draws closer to hers, no matter how much he tries to fight against it. It further complicates things that their growing friendship is strictly forbidden. Earth people are prohibited in Arkana, yet Molly continues to cross through the portal to Arkana to see Victor. Torn between their double lives, they go down a dangerous path, from where there is no return and multiple endings. Fields of Elysium is a suspenseful, romantic tale full of forbidden secrets, unimaginable danger, deception, and the never-ending fight for true love.

Few Excerpts:

(Chapter 1)

It wasn’t easy to start in a new school. All week long, instead of hanging out with friends I knew since kindergarten, I stood alone in corners and ate my lunch without company. The kids at Beverly Hills High were entirely different from the ones in my old school. Nobody even noticed me or asked where I was from. I turned into an invisible person, a ghost, lingering around the corridors, while my old life slowly became history, past tense.
I wasn’t sure how I felt about my parents for uprooting me. There was definitely some anger in me, disappointment. I knew I would never do the same to my children. Like ever. It just wasn’t fair for them to make a choice that impacted all of our lives without even considering my point of view in the decision-making.
I missed my friends and my old life terribly. I wanted to go back to my favorite pizzeria with Gill, ride our bicycles to the woods, steal apples from Mrs. Collins’ tree. Adults always say time heals everything. In my case, as the days passed, the more miserable I felt

(Chapter 8)

“Don’t worry, it won’t hurt at all.” His voice was a gentle breeze, his breath warm and delicious. I licked my lips from an automatic reflex. It must have been a reflex because I’d never do such a thing on purpose. To kiss a boy had never been so alluring to me as it was at that moment. As a matter of fact, kissing a guy held no allure for me before. None whatsoever.
His finger touched my forehead. He was right about the pain; there was none, only a little sensitivity.
Slowly I closed my eyes while my lips parted. I could sense my body leaning toward Victor, as if my common sense was unable to withstand this physical attraction.
Every nerve under my skin surrendered to the touch of his finger and transmitted an impulse of intense yearning to my heart, almost killing me in the process.
My eyes sprang open to see Victor’s longing gaze. All I wanted at that moment was to tell him how I felt. Yet I couldn’t. The words didn’t seem to form in my mouth.
But a little warning voice was also knocking on my head, “You don’t even know him, you crazy fool.”
I tried not to listen, but that split second of hesitation destroyed my chance to kiss him.

(Chapter 23)

The Prophet’s expressionless face didn’t give the truth away.
“You must let him fulfill his destiny or the destruction of the Arkanian civilization will be your fault.”
“Victor said that your presence was first documented about two hundred years ago. You don’t look a day older than sixty.”
“Fifty-eight actually.”
“You lived on Earth, didn’t you? And came back from time to time.”
“Just like you, American girl.”
“What? How did you know?” I stepped back, uncertain about the Prophet’s intentions.
“It’s very easy to recognize an American. You have that peculiar accent.”
“But you don’t.”
He chuckled shortly. “What I wouldn’t give for a glass of good California wine or a bite of an In and Out burger!” he said with perfect American cadence.
Hearing these earthly words gave me a strange feeling, way beyond my comprehension. I didn’t know what to say from the shock.
Taking in my bewildered face, the Prophet merely sipped on his drink.
“I’m sick of this honey mead,” he growled, and sent the glass flying into the hearth. The flames flared up and whipped out of the fireplace as the alcohol fueled the fire.
“Come. We have a lot to talk about.”
